Housing Extension Am Rain, Lucerne
Public Competition

More than 500 kilograms of construction waste are produced every second in Switzerland. The construction industry is responsible for about one third of CO2 emissions and 85% of all waste. In the last twenty years, densification has meant above all: demolition and new construction.
The architectural answer to the climate and housing crisis is impressively simple: transform instead of replace.
This ensures a well-mixed resident structure, reduces the ecological footprint and saves building costs. By further developing the existing housing stock, a natural diversity is created in which old and new complement each other and the history and identity of the settlement are carried into the future. The result is a home for many, a lively neighbourhood. The densification of the existing housing stock offers the opportunity to meet the pressing issues of our time in a positive, pragmatic and creative way.
